Rapha Manchester 2 London 2024 – Tomasz Sobkowiak

On June 23, 2024, the annual “Rapha Manchester 2 London” cycling event took place, attracting dozens of cycling enthusiasts. This event is organized in collaboration with Ambitious About Autism, which supports individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. Known for its picturesque route, unique atmosphere, and excellent organization, the event once again proved to be not only a sporting challenge but also a great opportunity to spend time outdoors with like-minded individuals.

Preparation for the Race

I started preparing for the “M2L” a few months before the event itself. Regular training, a proper diet, and taking care of my equipment were key elements to ensure success on the route.

Journey to the Event

My journey to the “M2L” was a challenge in itself. I began from Chandler’s Ford, driving to Rapha’s headquarters in London. There, I planned to transfer to a train to Manchester. Unfortunately, my train, as well as several earlier ones, were canceled. Luckily, I managed to catch the next connection, though I arrived in Manchester two hours later than planned, standing in the aisle for 3 hours with other passengers whose connections were also canceled. Upon arrival, I headed straight to the hotel to rest and recharge for the early start the next day at 5:40 AM.

Race Day

On race day, the weather turned out to be perfect for cycling. The temperature hovered around 20 degrees Celsius, and a light breeze favored the cyclists. The start took place punctually at 5:40 AM in front of the Rapha store in Manchester. Fortunately, there was coffee and sweet rolls available before the start to energize the riders.

Route and Race Progress

The race route was 350 km (220 miles) long with a total elevation gain of 3,400 meters. It led through the picturesque but hilly Peak District and then through the somewhat flatter remainder of England. Each kilometer was met with growing satisfaction as I overcame my own barriers, enjoying the stunning views that beautifully represented the English countryside. The lack of route markings required constant navigation, which became an additional challenge when my Garmin warned that the battery was running low, and it wasn’t even halfway through the route. Thankfully, I had a power bank with me that I managed to connect without stopping or dismounting. This allowed me to stay with a group that I was riding well with.

Throughout the ride, I had the pleasure of riding in several groups, from very strong to slightly weaker ones, but one thing that united all these groups was the fantastic people. Thanks to this, the several hours in the saddle passed faster than some much shorter events I have participated in.

Finish and Impressions

After several hours of intense riding, I reached the finish line at Rapha HQ in London. I managed to cross the finish line as the 38th rider out of nearly 100 participants. Moreover, I finished while it was still daylight, without needing to use lights. Fatigue quickly gave way to the satisfaction of achieving my goal. The organizers had prepared commemorative medals for all participants and refreshments that allowed for a quick recovery. It was also an opportunity to exchange experiences and impressions with other race participants.

Summary

“M2L” turned out to be an unforgettable experience. Professional organization, a beautiful route, and a great atmosphere made me already look forward to the next edition. For every cycling enthusiast, participating in such an event is an excellent opportunity to test their abilities and spend time with people who share the same passion. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience an incredible adventure on two wheels!
