On Saturday, June 15th, members of United Eagles participated in Rafa Rides 2024. We joined forces with Polish Wings and, along with over two hundred fellow countrymen, gathered at the start of this fantastic event. Among the participants, we saw many old friends and former club members. It was great to see you all!
There were 25, 50, 75, and 100-mile routes to choose from. Our riders, of course, chose the longest one.
Despite the less-than-ideal weather conditions, the participants were in high spirits and a competitive atmosphere was palpable. Just before the start, almost the entire Polish Wings team lined up for a commemorative photo – it was a sight to behold. Shortly after, we stood at the starting line and, after listening to the marshal’s instructions, we set off.
There were probably about 20-25 people in the group. A tight formation quickly formed, seemingly gliding effortlessly as if the air offered no resistance. Or maybe it was just an illusion or a tailwind?
In any case, at the first pit stop, our group’s average speed was over 34 km/h. Unfortunately, it turned out that not everyone was having such an easy time and the group shrunk a bit.
As time went on, the weather worsened. It was dry only until about 80 km. Then a light rain started, then a bit heavier, and eventually everyone got completely soaked. The size of our group kept changing as different people joined us, either on the route or during the stops designated by the organizers. Later, unfortunately, our small peloton started to break apart as larger hills appeared on the route and fatigue set in. In the last few kilometres, a storm and heavy rain caught us. At this point, everyone probably didn’t care that they were getting soaked to the bone, but the lack of visibility, traction, and for some, the lack of brakes that simply stopped responding in these conditions, posed a problem. Anyway, we managed to reach the finish line where we were greeted with applause from the organizers, fellow cyclists, and loved ones.
As a reward, everyone received a cold beer and a voucher for a hamburger, which turned out to be really delicious – everyone seemed to praise it.
In conclusion, it was a mega-successful day despite the weather conditions. Every participant certainly fought an internal battle with themselves and their own weaknesses. Congratulations to everyone and thank you to the organizers and friends from Polish Wings, PGR, former club members who rode with us again, as well as all those who supported us in spirit!
